Paris Saint-Germain’s decision to suspend Lionel Messi for two weeks after his unauthorized trip to Saudi Arabia has been criticized by former Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez.
Upon his return to PSG training on Monday, Messi was required to apologize to the club for missing a training session due to the one-day trip. In addition, the club docked his wages, and he missed their recent victory over Troyes.
Tevez, Messi’s former international teammate, expressed disapproval of PSG’s treatment of the superstar, accusing the Ligue 1 club of neglecting Messi since his arrival at the Parc des Princes.
Tevez told TyC Sports, “I think Messi gives us all a humbling blow. Because if you told me, when I was world champion, that I had to apologize for going on a trip when I had a day off, I’d go back to Rosario and stay there drinking mate. You’d have to apologize to me! But Messi, the truth is, he puts the club above everything else. And I think that, in that case, you have to take your hat off to him. Then we can say a lot of things about a club that didn’t really look after him. From the first moment he arrived, they didn’t look after him. That’s how it is.”
With the sanction now lifted, Messi is expected to be back in contention for PSG’s home fixture with Ajaccio on Saturday.
