Robert Barisford Brown came on the 5th day of February 1969 when he was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He grew up in Roxbury’s Orchard Park Projects, a notorious neighborhood in Massachusetts. At the tender age of three he had his first stage appearance on the same stage as his music idol James Brown in his Boston neighborhood. Every once in a while, Bobby decided to be as famous as his role model.
He pitched a tent with New Edition pop music group at the age of 9, where his music career took off in earnest. The group, made up of his friends Michael Bivins, Ricky Bell, Travis Pettus, and Corey Rackley, landed their first record deal with Arthur Baker’s Streetwise Records, which slated the release of their debut album , Candy Girls , on March 1, 1983. The album was widely received and it sold millions of copies. Their second and self-titled album ( Neue Edition ) came next in 1984 and was followed by another album entitled Alles für die Liebe released in 1985.
After making a name for himself with the band, Bobby Brown soon joined MCA Records to launch his solo career. There he released his first solo album entitled King of the Stage in 1986, which did not fare so well. His second studio album Don’t Be Cruel fared so much better, selling more than twelve million copies. It eventually became the best-selling album of 1989 and received three Bobby Awards. The American Music Awards, a Soul Train Music Award and a People’s Choice Award. His other solo albums include Bobby (1992), Forever (1997), Masterpiece (2012) and a reunion album he had titled New Edition in 1996, Back at Home.
The R&B star has embarked on multiple tours both with New Edition group and as a single act. He has also made an indelible mark on the film and television series industry, where he has appeared in over 12 projects including Gosht Buster II (1989), Two Can Play The Game (2001), Be Bobby Brown (2005) his own reality show, Real Men of Hollywood (2013) among others. Bobby was born to mother Carole Elizabeth and father Herbart James Brown. His mother was a substitute teacher and his father worked as a construction worker.
