George Robert Newhart was born on September 5, 1929 in Oak Park, Illinois. His father, George David Newhart, was a co-owner of a plumbing and heating business while his mother, Julia Pauline, was a homemaker. He had three sisters: Virginia, Mary Joan and Pauline. The Newhart family were Roman Catholic of Irish, German, and English descent.
The young Newhart had his elementary education at St. Catherine of Siena’s Grammar School and high school education at St. Ignatius College Prep. He then studied accounting at Loyola University in Chicago, graduating in 1952. After graduating, Bob Newhart worked as a clerk for the US Army during the Korean War. After two years, his service in the army ended and he then worked as an accountant for various companies.
career
By 1958, Bob Newhart worked as a copywriter for an indie film and production company. To deal with the monotony of his office work, he and a co-worker engaged in humorous telephone conversations. After a while they started recording and broadcasting them to radio stations. They achieved only a small measure of success, but this was just the beginning of bigger things for Newhart.
The tapes caught the attention of a local DJ, who immediately spotted Newhart’s talent. DJ Dan Sorkin gave him airtime for short monologues and helped him land a deal with Warner Brothers in 1959. To say the album was a success is an understatement. The album topped the Billboard Albums Chart (the first comedy album to reach that height) and peaked at number 2 on the UK Albums Chart. It also won Newhart, a Grammy for Best Album (the first-ever time a comedy album had achieved such a feat) and the Grammy for Best New Artist in 1961. Newhart followed with two other equally successful albums. The button-down spirit strikes back! (1960) and Behind the Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart (1961). The former won him the 1961 Grammy for Best Comedy Performance – Spoken Word.From comedy, Bob Newhart moved into the world of television. His first show was the 1961 NBC show, The Bob Newhart Show . Although the sitcom received a few nominations, it was canceled after one season. After the show ended, Newhart continued his comedy performances, appearing on various comedy shows.
In 1972, Newhart debuted his most enduring legacy, The Bob Newhart Show . In the sitcom he played the role of an ordinary psychologist, Dr. Robert Hartley, who had to contend with a cast of colorful characters. The show ran for six seasons on CBS, ending in 1978. The series was loved and had a tremendous impact on television and comedy in the United States. It has been nominated for various awards and in 2013 TV Guide ranked it at number 49 on its list of the 60 Greatest TV Shows of All Time.
The comedian also created and participated in other sitcoms Newhart (1982–1990), Bob (1992–93), and George & Leo (1997–98). Bob Newhart is still very much alive and active despite having a few health challenges. For example, in 1985 he was hospitalized for secondary polycythemia. The disease was triggered by his heavy smoking. However, he made a full recovery and has since quit smoking. The comic is not only alive, but still doing what it loves most.
In July 2018, he released a new audio series entitled Amazon hello Bob . It features fun and informative chats with the likes of Will Farrell, Lisa Kudrow, Jimmy Kimmel, Sarah Silverman, Conan O’Brien, etc. Newhart will also reprise his guest role as Professor Proton in the 12th and final season of The Big Bang Theory.
