Tiffany Haddish has shared her challenging journey before achieving stardom in Hollywood.
During a period of homelessness, the actress and comedian admitted to attending weddings uninvited in order to access complimentary meals and beverages.
‘I’ve crashed weddings before, given a speech, and didn’t know anybody there,’ Haddish, 43, revealed to People while promoting season two of the Apple TV+ series, The Afterparty. ‘That’s when I was homeless and hungry.’
During this time, she specifically targeted weddings at a hotel in Westchester, a neighborhood on the Westside Region of Los Angeles County.
‘I would have two or three drinks, and then I would grab the microphone and be like, “I just want to say that you are the most beautiful couple,”‘ she recounted. ‘Everybody would be looking at me like, “Who is this Black girl at our wedding?”‘
The topic of weddings arose as Haddish discussed how season two of the murder mystery comedy series revolves around nuptials.
Following her graduation from El Camino Real High School in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, in 1997, Haddish spent a period of time living in her car.
At the age of 26, she made her professional acting debut in the 2005 drama film, The Urban Demographic, which centered around hip-hop.
That same year, she also made guest appearances in the teen sitcom, That’s So Raven, and the MTV series, Pimp My Ride.
Facing years of struggle in the entertainment industry, she eventually gained widespread recognition for her portrayal of Dina, the enthusiastic friend in the comedy film Girls Trip (2017), alongside Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, and Jada Pinkett Smith.
Under the direction of Malcolm D. Lee, from a screenplay by Kenya Barris and Tracy Oliver, the movie achieved considerable commercial success, grossing $140.9 million on a $19 million budget.
Haddish has since contributed to several successful television and film projects, including Night School (2018), which surpassed $103 million at the global box office, as well as voice roles in popular animations such as The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019), The Secret Life Of Pets 2 (2019) and The Angry Birds Movie 2.
