Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal, has shouldered the blame for the team’s 3-1 loss to West Ham in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.
At the time Arsenal conceded three goals, including an own goal by Ben White, as well as strikes from Mohamed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen, before Martin Odegaard scored one for the Gunners.
After the game, Arteta addressed the defeat, stating, “I am deeply disappointed. I take full responsibility for this. We intended to play a completely different game.”
He further added, “The course of the game was altered due to the first goal, and while we can discuss that, we must demand more from the team in order to achieve a positive outcome in a venue like this.”
Arteta also commented on the absence of VAR, saying, “If there had been VAR, there would certainly not have been a [first] goal.”
Arsenal’s next match is against Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday evening.
