Army mourns former COAS Gen Chris Alli


The former COAS Gen Chris Alli will be missed by the Army. Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), extended his sympathies on behalf of the Nigerian Army following the passing of the former Chief of Army Staff, Major General Mohammed Chris Alli (retd). Alli passed away due to a brief illness in the early hours of Sunday, November 19, 2023, at the Military Hospital in Lagos. The condolences were expressed in a statement released on Nigeria Army’s verified X account, @HQNigerianArmy, and signed by Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations.

The statement highlights the remarkable career of Gen Chris Alli, noting that he joined the Nigerian Army on October 20, 1967, as a member of the Emergency Short Service Combatant Course, and served diligently in various capacities, including staff, instructional, and command. Major General Alli (retd) held the position of Military Administrator of Plateau State and served the nation with honor and dedication in different roles. His commitment and dedication were evident as he rose through the ranks to become the Director, Military Intelligence (DMI), and eventually the 9th COAS in November 1993, until his retirement in August 1994.

Upon receiving the sad news of Alli’s demise, the COAS Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late former COAS. He offered prayers for the repose of Alli’s soul and for strength and solace for the family during this difficult time.
