Apex Legends Gameplay
Apex Legends is an online game where three-player squads use special characters called "Legends" with unique abilities. Players select a Legend and skydive onto a map to find weapons and equipment while avoiding other squads. The game's map shrinks over time, forcing encounters until one squad remains. Players can be revived if knocked down and resurrected if eliminated teammates' banners are collected within a time limit.

Teams aim to score points until one leads by two points or reaches at least three. This mode differs from the battle royale format by allowing players to buy equipment before fights using materials earned in previous rounds, similar to games like Counter-Strike and Valorant. However, this mode was later removed in Season 16.
Apex Legends Development
Apex Legends, developed by Respawn Entertainment, differs from their prior games, Titanfall and Titanfall 2. Work on Apex began before Titanfall 2's release in 2016, and by 2017, the whole Titanfall team was working on it. The game initially started as smaller prototypes exploring elements of a Titanfall sequel but transitioned into a successful battle royale-style game, keeping only certain aspects from the Titanfall series.

They decided to treat it as a new IP instead of a Titanfall game due to differences in gameplay and the absence of iconic Titanfall elements. Respawn had to persuade Electronic Arts (EA) to back the project, deviating from EA's expectations for the studio. To build buzz, they arranged a surprise reveal through influencers during the Super Bowl, deviating from the typical marketing strategies for EA titles.
The game was developed using a modified version of the Source engine, pushing the engine's limits due to the game's large map and draw distances. There were plans for cross-platform play, but some limitations were expected concerning game progression and in-game purchases across different systems.
Respawn aimed to expand the game's reach, planning to bring Apex Legends to China through a partnership with Tencent Games. They also intended to launch the game on various platforms, including mobile devices and the Nintendo Switch.

Over time, it expanded to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S in 2022. A mobile version called Apex Legends Mobile was released in May 2022 but was shut down in May 2023.
Regarding esports, Apex Legends quickly gained traction as a competitive game, with tournaments and events planned from the game's early days. The Apex Legends Global Series was announced in 2019, featuring various online and live events with substantial prize pools. ESPN also showcased Apex Legends events, aiming to establish it as a competitive esport alongside traditional sports events. Year 3 of the Apex Legends Global Series started in July 2022, attracting numerous teams and featuring significant prize money.
