Amy Hoover Sanders was born in 1981 in El Paso,Texas, the United States. Amy Hoover studied psychology at Williams College in Massachusetts. After graduating, she took a job teaching English in Guatemala, Central America. There she taught the kindergarten students of the Colegio Americano de Guatemala for a year.
When Amy returned to El Paso in 2004, she continued to work as a teacher. Shortly after her return, she co-founded La Fe Preparatory, a bilingual charter school where she taught first and second grade students while also serving as superintendent. Although she no longer teaches at La Fe Preparatory, she remains a director of the school as well as the Director of Educational Development at La Fe Community Development Corporation.
In addition to her paid jobs, Amy Hoover Sanders is involved in a number of charitable organizations. She served at the Centro de Salu Familiar La Fe for a good seven years. She currently serves as the “Choose to Excel” director of CREEED, a non-profit focused on identifying and implementing solutions that improve educational standards in El Paso, particularly in the area of preparing the community’s students for the college.
In 2013, Hoover Sanders became President of Stanton Street Technology, a software and internet services company that her husband Beto O’rouke founded in 2000. However, she left the position in 2017 to gain more time for Beto’s political campaigns.family and married life
Amy Sanders met Beto O’rourke in 2004 on a blind date a friend organized to form the duo and it worked! O’rourke had taken her across the border to a restaurant in Juarez, Mexico, 11 miles from El Paso. While O’rourke was running for city council at the time, Sanders was running for graduate school. However, she dropped her ambition and stayed in El Paso after falling in love with Beto. After just ten months, the couple wed on September 24, 2005 at the Sanders family ranch in Lamy, Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Amy has three children with her husband – two boys and girls named Ulysses (born 2007), Henry (born 2008) and Molly (born 2011). The family of four currently resides in El Paso, Texas.
