Amelia Victoria Vega Polanco de Guerra, a singer, actress and model, was born on November 7, 1984, in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic. In 2003, at the age of 18, she became the first Dominican to win the Miss Universe competition, also becoming the youngest to win the competition since 1994.

Amelia Vega is the daughter of Otto Vega, a general practitioner, and Patricia Polanco Álvarez, an aviator who was elected Miss Monde at the end of 1980.
After winning the Miss Dominican Republic competition in 2002 at age 17, she represented the Dominican Republic in the Miss Universe election held in Panama on June 3, 2003, becoming the tallest competitor to ever win the title at 1m88 (6ft 2in).
Her travels and participation in various events and organizations as Miss Universe led her to become the spokesperson for an association that strives to prevent AIDS. She eventually moved to New York, USA.
Amelia began modeling, landing on the covers of many prestigious magazines. She also became the face of beauty products for Cover Girl for four years, significantly contributing to her net worth.
