In a recent interview on the Arise Television programme, former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, elucidated why he does not support the emigration of Nigerians, popularly known as “Japa”.
Amaechi emphasized that leaving the country may only lead to obtaining a 9-to-5 job, which primarily involves working in an office from 9 am to 5 pm, whereas staying in Nigeria presents the opportunity to pursue political offices and have a say in the country’s economy.
He discouraged individuals from leaving the country by stating, “If you are looking for opportunity, please stay back in Nigeria but if you are looking for 9-5, safety and others, you can leave the country.”
Additionally, Amaechi attributed his candidness to his fear of God, distinguishing himself from other elites and politicians in the country. He emphasized the importance of honesty and integrity, stating, “The difference between me and most Nigerian elites is that I say things the way it is and I say it unknowingly. It is the way God has brought me up and I will tell you the truth even if you put a gun on my head.”
Contrary to political correctness, Amaechi asserted, “I don’t want to be politically correct and if diplomacy means lying, then I won’t lie. The best or worst you can get of me at that particular time is to walk away from that place instead of lying.”
When pressed about his political career, Amaechi declined to provide a response. He served as the Minister of Transportation of Nigeria from 2015 to 2022 in the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. Subsequently, he resigned and contested the presidential primary under the ruling All-Progressive Congress, but was defeated by Bola Tinubu.
