Afrobeats Award at the VMAs 2023 Goes to Rema and Selena Gomez

The collaboration of afrobeats singer Rema and international artist Selena Gomez on the hit song “Calm Down” has made history at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), as they clinched the Afrobeats award.

This is the first time that an afrobeats nomination has won at the VMAs, highlighting the increasing influence and recognition of Afrobeats on a global scale. Rema and Selena Gomez were celebrated for their exceptional musical collaboration.

Their track “Calm Down” not only became a summer anthem but also secured them the distinction of being the first recipients of the Afrobeats award at the VMAs.

Not only did they win musically, but the duo also stood out with their impeccable fashion choices.

Both artists showcased their unique styles on the VMAs red carpet. Selena Gomez opted for a show-stopping red dress designed by Oscar de la Renta.

Her gorgeous gown combined elegance and dreaminess, featuring a striking cut-out design that beautifully revealed hints of skin. The shredded hemline added allure by accentuating her legs, creating a statement piece that exuded confidence and elegance.

Complementing her sexy and sophisticated look, Selena chose a barely-there strappy sandal and minimal jewelry.

On the other hand, Rema made his own fashion statement by donning a complete leather ensemble, including a leather cap.

His outfit was further enhanced with expensive-looking glasses and a bold, oversized neck chain. Rema’s distinctive sense of style, coupled with his musical talent, solidified him as a true fashion and Afrobeats music icon on the VMAs red carpet.

This historic win for Rema and Selena Gomez also puts Africa on the map. During their acceptance speech, Rema expressed gratitude to the entire African continent for streaming the song, while Selena Gomez specifically thanked Nigeria.

Winning this award is a momentous achievement for Afrobeats music.
