The former Liverpool star, Mark Lawrenson, has expressed his opinion stating that when goalkeeper Andre Onana departs for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in the upcoming days, Manchester United will not feel his absence.
Lawrenson is of the belief that Altay Bayindir, the backup goalkeeper for Man United, will be a suitable replacement for the Cameroonian international. In an interview with Paddy Power, Lawrenson remarked, “Altay Bayindir can’t be any worse than Andre Onana! The number of mistakes that Onana has made, Manchester United won’t be any worse off if he heads to the AFCON. Sometimes you have to throw someone in – this is his chance. Hopefully, he will get some protection, which Onana has never had, but he has been poor anyway.”
Onana is anticipated to link up with the Cameroon squad after Man United’s Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
