Adam Wainwright: A Brief Overview
Adam Parrish Wainwright was born on August 30, 1981. He is a professional baseball starting pitcher who plays for the St. Louis Cardinals in the Major League Baseball (MLB). Wainwright’s journey in baseball began when the Atlanta Braves drafted him at 29th overall in the first round of the 2000 amateur draft from Glynn Academy in Brunswick, Georgia. His exceptional performance in the minor leagues made him highly respected as one of the Braves’ top pitching prospects. After the 2003 season, the Braves traded him to the Cardinals for outfielder J. D. Drew. This trade has since been deemed advantageous for the Cardinals. Wainwright made his MLB debut on September 11, 2005, against the New York Mets. He commenced his MLB career as a relief pitcher and later became a closer during his rookie season of 2006, enabling him to save the series-clinching games of both the National League Championship Series and World Series.
In 2011, he missed the season due to Tommy John surgery. Despite this setback, he emerged as a leading pitcher, leading the National League in wins, innings pitched, and games started on multiple occasions. His career highlights also include multiple top-ten finishes in categories such as earned run average, strikeouts, walks plus hits per inning pitched, and complete games. In 2014, he achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first pitcher in MLB history to post nine of his first 18 starts with seven innings pitched and no runs allowed. He has garnered over 100 wins in his career, secured three All-Star selections, earned two Rawlings Gold Glove Awards, and finished in the top three in the Cy Young Award balloting three times. With 1,306 strikeouts in his career to date, Wainwright is currently second to Bob Gibson in Cardinals franchise history in strikeouts. Beyond his on-field achievements, he is also known for running a fantasy football league where the registration fees are dedicated to charitable causes. As of now, he is signed through 2018.
