Abiodun not behind Ogun Speaker’s impeachment, say lawmakers

The lawmakers have denied that Governor Dapo Abiodun had a hand in the impeachment of Ogun State House of Assembly Speaker, Olakunle Oluomo. The impeachment, carried out by 18 out of 26 members, resulted in the immediate appointment of Oludaisi Elemide as Oluomo’s replacement. The new Speaker emphasized that the Governor was not involved in the ousting.

Mr Damilola Soneye, speaking on the Speaker’s impeachment, cited reasons including high-handedness, lack of focus and transparency, financial misappropriation, and incitement of members against each other. Oluomo was reportedly attending a swearing-in event when the impeachment occurred. Efforts to get Oluomo’s reaction to his impeachment were unsuccessful.

The motion for Oluomo’s impeachment was moved by Adegoke Adeyanju Awoso and seconded by Mr Ademola Adeniran. Oluomo is currently facing trial over alleged financial misappropriation involving N2bn. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had filed charges against Oluomo and three other legislative staff. The police presence at the Assembly complex raised tensions, with one lawmaker alleging that the police shot at his car tire in a search for arms.

The House adjourned sitting for a week, with the Clerk and Deputy Clerk in attendance at the plenary.
